The Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto) is one of the more popular marine aquarium fish, admired for its striking, contrasting colors and captivating behavior. Originating from the Caribbean Sea and Western Atlantic, this vibrant fish is also known as a Fairy Basslet. Keep reading below to learn more about caring for the Royal Gramma Basslet.

Aquarium Setup: The Royal Gramma Basslet thrives in aquariums with a minimum size of 30 gallons, providing ample space for swimming and exploring. These fish appreciate rock structures, caves, and hiding spots to establish territories and seek refuge. A well-aerated environment with stable water conditions, including a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C), a pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, is essential for their well-being.

Water Parameters: Maintaining good water quality is crucial for the health of the Royal Gramma Basslet. Regular monitoring of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate levels, along with consistent water testing and water changes will help ensure optimal conditions for these fish and other aquarium inhabitants.

Diet: The Royal Gramma is carnivorous and appreciates a varied diet. Offer high-quality marine pellets, frozen or refigerated mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small meaty foods. We often feed our fish a combination of foods from such brands as Dr. G, LRS, Nyos, PE Mysis and many more. THey will also hunt for live copepods. Regular light feedings, two to three times a day, contribute to their overall health and vibrant coloration.

Compatibility: Known for their peaceful nature, Royal Gramma Basslets are generally compatible with a variety of tankmates. Ideal companions include other non-aggressive fish species, such as gobies, small wrasses, and similarly sized reef-safe fish. However, caution should be exercised with aggressive or territorial tankmates to prevent potential conflicts.

Reef Safety: The Royal Gramma is considered reef safe, making it an excellent addition to reef aquariums. These fish coexist harmoniously with corals and invertebrates, adding both beauty and activity to the reef environment. Their vibrant colors create a stunning contrast against the backdrop of live corals, making them a popular choice among reef enthusiasts.

Disease Prevention: To maintain the health of Royal Gramma Basslets, a proactive approach to disease prevention is essential. Quarantine new additions before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the potential spread of pathogens. Regular observation, proper diet, and a stress-free environment contribute to disease prevention.

Royal Gramma Basslets reach a maximum size of about 3 1/2".
