The Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) is a mesmerizing marine species that adds a touch of elegance and grace to any aquarium. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species, also known as the Decorated Firefish, is admired for its vibrant colors and distinctive dorsal fin. In this guide, we will explore the essentials of caring for the Purple Firefish, covering aquarium setup, diet, compatibility, and its suitability for reef environments.

1. Aquarium Setup: For optimal care, provide a well-established aquarium with a minimum size of 30 gallons. Purple Firefish appreciate a habitat with plenty of live rock structures, creating hiding places and territories. Ensure a stable environment with proper filtration, aeration, and regular water changes. These fish prefer a peaceful setting, so choose tankmates carefully to avoid aggression.

2. Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C), a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Regular monitoring and adjustments of these parameters are essential for the well-being of Purple Firefish.

3. Diet: Purple Firefish are carnivores with a diet primarily consisting of small meaty foods. Offer a varied diet that includes high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, Masstick and suitable frozen or live foods. It is crucial to provide multiple small feedings throughout the day, as these fish have small stomachs and benefit from a steady supply of nutrients. Similar to Anthias, these fish feed throughout the day in the water column, so they are classified as planktonic feeders.

4. Compatibility: Purple Firefish are generally peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive fish species including other Firefish. Ideal tankmates include similarly sized gobies, smaller wrasses, and other community fish. Avoid aggressive or territorial species that may intimidate the Purple Firefish. Additionally, keep in mind that these fish can be skittish and may jump if startled, so ensure a secure aquarium lid.

5. Reef Safety: The Purple Firefish is considered reef safe, making it a fantastic addition to reef aquariums. They do not exhibit destructive behavior towards corals or invertebrates. Their striking appearance and peaceful nature make them an excellent choice for reef enthusiasts
