To thrive, aquarium plants require approximately 20 different nutrients with nitrogen being particularly important. Nitrogen is classified as a macronutrient and is required in the second-largest amount after carbon dioxide (CO2). What is Nitrogen Needed for in the Aquarium?
Plants require nitrogen for the creation of essential amino acids, which are vital components of proteins and enzymes and play a central role in plant metabolism. Nitrogen is also necessary for the development of chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color of leaves. Plants can absorb nitrogen in various chemical forms, such as ammonium, nitrate, and urea, but in aquariums, nitrate is the primary form present. Nitrate can be stored and transported within plant cells. In normal, planted community aquariums, additional nitrogen is usually unnecessary as it is already present in sufficient or even excessive quantities through the feed. However, in demanding planted aquariums, such as aquascaping or Holland aquariums, the nutrient requirements are much higher, especially for macronutrients.
