The underwater world is teeming with diverse and captivating marine life and many of them are uesful in reef aquariums, like the Blue Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius tricolor). Known for their vibrant blue legs and engaging behavior, these crustaceans can play a vital role in helping keep your reef aquarium clean.

Physical Characteristics:

Blue Leg Hermit Crabs are relatively small creatures, typically reaching sizes of about 1" or less. Their distinguishing feature is their striking blue legs, which contrast beautifully with their reddish-brown carapace. As these crabs grow, they undergo molting, shedding their exoskeleton to accommodate their increasing size. It's important to provide an adequate supply of empty shells in the aquarium to ensure they have options for shelter during this vulnerable period.

Benefits in a Reef Aquarium:

Algae Control: Blue Leg Hermit Crabs are renowned for their algae-eating capabilities. They voraciously consume various types of algae, helping to keep the aquarium clean and preventing the overgrowth of nuisance algae. This makes them valuable contributors to the overall health and aesthetics of a reef tank.

Detritus Removal: These crabs are not just limited to algae; they also feed on detritus and leftover food particles. By scavenging the substrate and live rock, Blue Leg Hermit Crabs play a vital role in reducing organic debris, preventing the accumulation of harmful substances that could otherwise compromise water quality.

Aeration of Substrate: As Blue Leg Hermit Crabs move around the aquarium in search of food, they inadvertently aerate the substrate. This helps in preventing the formation of anaerobic pockets, promoting a healthier environment for the beneficial bacteria responsible for nitrogen cycling.

Diet:

Blue Leg Hermit Crabs are opportunistic omnivores. In addition to algae and detritus, they will consume various types of organic matter, including decaying plant material and small invertebrates. To supplement their diet, it's advisable to provide specialized sinking pellets or frozen foods designed for herbivores and omnivores.

Shell Upgrades:

As Blue Leg Hermit Crabs grow, they outgrow their existing shells. It's fascinating to observe them searching for and selecting new shells that offer a snug fit. Providing a range of empty shells of different sizes in the aquarium is essential to ensure the well-being and growth of these crustaceans. A lack of suitable shells can hinder their development and lead to stress.
