The blackcap basslet (Gramma melacara) is a small, colorful fish found primarily in the Caribbean Sea. They are collected from reefs in the Bahamas and other tropical regions.

Their average life span is around 4-6 years in captivity. They have a moderate aquarium difficulty level, requiring stable water conditions and plenty of hiding spots.

Blackcap basslets are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish species. They are omnivores, and their diet should consist of a variety of live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and high-quality pellets.

These fish typically grow to a maximum size of around 3 inches, making them suitable for smaller aquariums.

Blackcap basslets are compatible with other peaceful fish species such as clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. They may prey upon small crustaceans and invertebrates in the aquarium, so caution should be taken when housing them with shrimp or hermit crabs. Additionally, they may exhibit territorial behavior towards other basslets or similar species, so it is recommended to only keep one blackcap basslet per tank unless in a larger aquarium with plenty of space and hiding spots.
