This is the Very High Output version of our already powerful 14000K Reef Spectrum fixture. The 14000K Reef Spectrum XB Series deilvers 27% more light than our original 14000K Reef Spectrum. The XB Series uses the same amount of electricity and contains the same LED colors that are used in the original series.
This spectrum contains more blue than our 12,000K Reef Spectrum fixture while generating the proper wavelengths needed by the Zooxanthellae algae which produce food needed for the survival and growth of most hard and soft corals. We’ve taken great care to select a combination of industrial quality LEDs to provide measurably better color rendering capabilities than other 14,000K lights. The result is a fixture that reveals the rich colors in your corals and dramatically enhances the overall appearance of the tank.
Use in conjunction with the Super Actinic Reef spectrum for a wide range of eye-popping fluorescence from your corals. Use in conjunction with the Pure UV spectrum to maximize the green fluorescent from you corals. Note: For single fixture tanks, a 90° wide beam angle is recommended for tank mounting or “rim mounting” to ensure even distribution of the light.

We use 1W and 3W LEDs in our fixtures, and they are driven at 350mA to ensure long life and high electrical efficiency. Due to the large number of LEDs we use in every fixture, we do not need to overdrive the LEDs to achieve extremely high PAR ratings.

PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) defines the type of light that is needed by corals (specifically, coral’s symbiotic algae) for photosynthesis and it is measured in micromoles per square meter per second (μmol/m2/s). PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) is a measurement of the amount of PAR that falls on a given area every second, and it is an extremely important metric for successfully propagating corals in your aquarium. All of our LED fixtures emit extremely high PPFD levels -- far higher than any fixture in our price range.
Light Levels:You need to define a desired light level to calculate the number of fixtures needed on your tank. Use these definitions as a guide:
Ultra High Light is defined as the light level that should only be used by advanced aquarists and researchers seeking to maximize coral coloration through elevated chromoprotein levels. Ultra high light will usually require the use of multiple fixtures, and users should have experience in maintaining a reef aquarium under high PAR levels. Depending on the light levels the corals were previously exposed to, users should slowly acclimate their tank to this light level by using a manual dimmer or a controller.
High Light is defined as the light level you will need to successfully grow hard corals, including SPS. This will likely require the use of multiple fixtures. Depending on the light levels the corals were previously exposed to, users should slowly acclimate their tank to this light level by using a manual dimmer or a controller.
Medium Light is defined as the level that is most often used to successfully keep soft corals and LPS in your aquarium. In the event only one fixture is required and you want to add a supplemental fixture (Pure UV, Purple Wave or Super Actinic Reef), the use of a manual dimmer or controller is recommended to lower the total light level.
Viewing Light is used by those who don’t intend to grow coral but want an illuminated tank where the colors on fish will stand out.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The fixture calculator is designed to give you a recommendation on the number and length of fixtures needed to achieve a specified light requirement in the tank you select. Due to rounding, the calculator may return the same recommendation for multiple light levels. This is not an error.
To achieve the highest light (PAR) levels in a reef aquarium with a single fixture (or single row of fixtures), we recommend the 75 or 90 degree beam angle mounted 2-3” above the water. Select the 75 degree beam angle on tanks measuring up to 12” wide (from front to back) and a 90 degree beam for tank widths over 12”.
When mounting at this height (2-3” above water line) the 60, 45 and 30 degree beam angles should only be used on aquariums with multiple rows of lights or to “target” a particular area. This level of light is usually only required in when you are trying to target specific areas of the aquarium (i.e. clams, island reefs, etc.).
Once you know your fixture mounting height, use the following as guidelines for determining the proper beam angle to use:
Height Above Water:
- 2-3": 90 degree beam angle
- 6-11": 75 degree beam angle
- 12-23": 60 degree beam angle
- 18-24": 45 degree beam angle
- >24": 30 degree beam angle
