It's not uncommon for the phone to ring and someone wants us to give us our opinnion on the RLSS protein skimmer line.  so we decided to ask our friends at Aqua Nerd permission to repost an article on the RLSS R6i protein skimmer that they recently reviewed.  Thanks to Brandon Klaus at Aqua Nerd for allowing us to repost his article on our blog and it's safe to say we agree with his assessment of the RLSS R6i skimmers.  We would also like to say that much of the information contained in the article can also be applied to the other models of RLSS Protein Skimmers.  Aquarium Specialty will have a new batch of these skimmers arriving next week (week of 4/15/13) in case you would like to place an order for the RLSS R6-i.  Please note that the packaging below is not typical of the way the RLSS skimmers ship.  This was sent direct to Brandon from the factory overseas and they arrive to us in regular retail packaging on a pallet.  Aquarium Specialty then double boxes them to help insure safe delivery.

Ok now for Brandon's review...

Sometimes our product reviews take a little time to fully complete. We strive to test the equipment under both normal and abnormal operating conditions for an extended period of time in an attempt to really gague how the equipment responds. Such is the case for a RLSS R6-i protein skimmer we received last year. We put the DC controllable skimmer on our 80-gallon frag setup and let her run, and we were more than pleased with the tiny skimmer’s performance.

Classic-NWB-110 Skimmer

Coral Vue has introduced two new protein skimmer models to their already vast array of skimmers that they offer.  What makes these different is the super small footprint.  We see these fitting nicely into smaller sumps like the one we are waiting on for our new 24x24x24 rimless cube anemone/clown fish display (more on that a a later date).

The Octopus Classic Skimmers are currently available in two models.  The 110-SSS has a footprint of only 6.1″ x 7.87″  and Body Diameter of 5″.  The height comes in at a relatively shot 19" and the skimmer is said to be able to handle aquariums up to 100 gallons.  The footprint on the 110s bigger brother comes in at 7.3″ x 9.45″ with a body diameter of 6″.  The overall height for the Octopus 150-SSS Classic is 20.8″ with a 150 gallon aquarium rating.

The Octopus 110-SSS is powered by a Aquatrance 1000s pinwheel pump while the Octopus 150-SSS is driven by the Aquatrance 1800s Pinwheel Pump.  Below is a list of details on both models.  For pricing and availability visit the two links below.

We wish we could have attended the 2014 InterZoo booth this year but we will continue to cover some of the highlights and innovations from vendors displaying at the biyearly event.

We have received some impressive display images from this years Vertex Aquaristik booth and we thought you might enjoy seeing them.  News from the show brings us a look at the Cerebra that's been in developement for 4 years.  Displayed in the booth are 4 fully function Cerebra aquarium controllers.  Judging from this we expect to see them hit the market very soon but still no word on a release date but purhaps we will know a little more in the very near future.

Also on display are the new Vertex Omega 180 and Omega 200 protein skimmers along with a new calcium reactor.  Aditionally they have a new DC pump they are working on and it will be called the Stratus and they are calling it a game changer.  Pictured last is the Stratus touch screen controller that will be used with the pump.  Sorry no release dates on these yet either but we are hoping we can find out a little more from Vertex Aquaristik sometime next week.  It looks like it might be an exciting 3rd and 4th quarter for Vertex Aquaristik if some of these new products come to market in the US this year.

With ever changing technology, it is a common problem for a seasoned aquarist to find himself with a piece of equipment that has been discontinued and is no longer supported by its manufacturer.  An example of this is the Vertex IN Skimmer.  Vertex IN skimmers were sold in many countries until they were replaced by the Omega line.  The IN series skimmers used a pump that is no longer available from Vertex.  Thanks to the ingenuity of the folks at Reef Life Support Systems (RLSS), the Vertex IN skimmers can continue to serve for many years to come.  Incorporating a modification which replaces the Vertex pump with a Waveline DC6000 controllable pump, your Vertex IN Skimmer can actually be revitalized.  RLSS has released a video of the modification which appears to involve an IN 250 or 280 model. RLSS has promised to send us a part list for the MOD and instructions on how to modify your skimmer to either increase it's performance or replace a dead skimmer pump that's been discontinued.  The skimmer modification only takes about 5 minutes and then you are back in business.

As you can see from the video, the skimmer mod with the newer pump technology is more powerful and efficient than the older original pump design.  For more on how to mod your skimmer please contact us.
