About Aquarium Speciality

About Us

Aquarium Specialty began as an interest more than 35 years ago when I graduated from College with a degree in Biology. After college, my first real job found me in Richmond, VA and within one month of receiving my first paycheck, I trekked out and bought a 55-gallon salt water fish tank, 2" x 4" stand and some starter fish (under gravel sold separately). After the tank was cycled, I picked up a maroon clownfish and a yellow tang. Within 4 months I realized that a fish only tank wasn't going to be enough to satisfy my interests, so I began learning more about how to keep corals alive in captivity. Like a lot of newbies, I started with green star polyps, leather corals and mushrooms.

Several moves later, I found my wife-to-be in Charlotte, North Carolina. We picked up our things (two 55-gallon tanks, livestock and water) and moved to maybe the hottest place on the planet, Columbia, South Carolina (seemingly at times). Over the years, the tanks seemed to propagate much like the corals and from the hobby grew a personal passion and later, a business.
